• Prediction: In-game AI will play better than you by 2029

in-game AI big robotRay Kurzweil, the famed futurist and author of a tall stack of smart books, just predicted that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence by 2029. Who knows what game systems will be out then, but it would be awesome to have AI challenging even elite gamers to a tough fight.

In-game AI has a bad reputation and I haven’t heard high expectations about game AI since before Quake 2 launched. Then again, we’re sure not evolving that fast and I’m sure that once game developers go beyond state machines and minimax this could happen. Play the online 20 Questions game for just a taste of a neural network that’s an example of one new technique that’s starting to be used.

With all the new genetic algorithms and neural networks out now I think it’s definitely possible that AI will hand most of us our tails in about 20 years. Hit us up in the comments if you think so too.

Besides … getting beat by a machine might not be that bad either. At least they won’t gloat over it (yet).
