Review Quickie: Turok is Cool, but Not to the Cool Kids

Turok gets one thumb up and several hours from me the last few nights. Gameplay is smooth and fast and the dinosaurs aren’t as tough to deal with as I expected, but they’re still a fun distraction that can be used for a bit of tactical advantage during a big multiplayer game. Here’s a quick MP video, unfortunately it’s shy on much dinosaur action:

The different-from-normal weapons are a big draw too. A bit more challenging to fight with than typical Halo 3 cannons. The bow is a sweet weapon as long as you’re holding it and avoiding the knife is a really good idea. The most fun weapon is the shotgun’s secondary mode and the havoc it causes. It’s a heck of a lot of fun to lob a flare into a crowded room or a sniper post. Dinosaurs like the heat, they’ll move in on the flare and tear up the place.

There are some problems reported with MP server lag. They mostly seem to be resolved tonight. Things are good enough that my wireless network is probably dropping more often than the servers.

The real problem … if you want to play with the cool kids stay off the busy Turok servers and drop a comment on Kotaku.

Turok Demo Available in US, Canada

The Turok demo is finally available in North America on XBox LIVE. It’s about time too. I’m all over some more playable dinosaur fighting action – but it will be nice to know if standing in a very short line (in about a week, man this demo is late!) for this game will be worth my $50. If not I’ll wait three days and pick it up at GameStop.

Thanks to someone for making this available in the US – but why did we need to wait? Download is 1.17 GB and Turok drops on 2/5/2008.

New Turok Trailer: Knife to a Gunfight

The newest Turok trailer is DULL! Gameplay looks smooth, but is a sniper video supposed to keep us interested?

Speaking of not intereting, the graphics don’t measure up to Gears of War either. When Turok launches on Feb 5, 2008 (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC) I’ll still be in line for it. Where else can you stab dinosaurs in the neck and also shoot at 16 other players at a time? No Turok demo for You

Xbox 360 gets the free Turok downloadable game demo today. This sequel of the classic series is a big 1.17 GB download (these things are starting to make me wish I bought the bigger drive for my 360). It’s available in Europe. Australia too. And Asia. Not for you though.

Major Nelson posted the availability. No comment from him on why it’s not available in the US, Canada, and similar places with heavy Xbox 360 ownership.
