I’ll never understand why the media and gaming outsiders are surprised by anything that happens in-game or by the weird game-related incidents that happen out-of-game. Especially as games get better and move toward open world exploration and open-ended invention (like scripting new events and motions in Wow or Second Life) people are going to do everything in-game that they can do outside of it.

That’s why this list of the 6 most unusual online gaming incidents doesn’t surprise me at all. Kidnapping and real-world murder happen for all sorts of bent reasons. Why not for in-game “theft” or to steal an valuable game account ($8,000 is almost three times Brazilians’ average annual income of $2,830)?

As for the Belgian police investigating an in-game crime … the police make all sorts of dumb mistakes too. I can’t wait to see what happens when they have to take on the “virtual” Russian mafia or other international organized criminals. Keep checking Fark to see how that goes.

The NCAA Football season ended with LSU making Ohio State look like a bunch of noobs in the BCS Bowl last night. It turns out they had a secret weapon from EA Sports. Based on EA’s NCAA Football 08 game the PlayAction Simulator helped Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux, LSU’s quarterbacks, to read the Ohio State defensive line.

The PlayAction version of NCAA Football probably isn’t much fun to play. Everything that isn’t play-related, like player celebrations and crowd cheering, has been stripped out. Plus, if the QB misreads a play it’s an automatic incompletion or interception. Still, the fact that these guys are learning from the game helps me to console myself that I could have played football. I only need to gain an extra 80 pounds and get over my irrational fear of choking on a mouth guard to really know.

Now that you know … learn them. They all have tradeoffs and one may work better than others, but all give better control and use less energy than gripping the sticks like hammers and pounding away. Use these and your drumming will get better faster.
